Phlake publish on Instagram

#repost phlakemansion

In 2017 Jonathan Elkær (producer and one half of phlake) did a song with @alinabaraz and @thegr8khalid . It was such a coincidence. Khalid’s verse was add’ed to the song at the very last minute and the song came out shortly after. Khalid had a few singles out at that point but wasn’t a super star yet. His debut album “American Teen” dropped shortly after Electric was released and everything just exploded. We met Khalid for the first time last year at Northside Festival, where he played simultanously with Phlake. So we weren’t able to watch him perform. But we had a good chat about the song and everything.

Jonathan did the production/music for the song in Copenhagen after Alina sent her vocals over. Shortly after - while Phlake was in LA - Khalid’s a&r sent his vocal parts and Jonathan finished the song in the living room of an airbnb house with just a laptop, headphones and a midi keyboard. Jonathan had like 2-3 days to finish the song due to a deadline and sat day and night in nothing but his boxers working on the song. It was released like three weeks after. We where still in LA at that point working on Phlake’s second album “Weird Invitations” where Alina Baraz also ended up featuring on the song “Gone”. Gone was also made without us being in the room with Alina.
Music is all about co-laboration and having fun in the studio (or wherever you make your music). But its definately possible to make great music without meeting in person.
Worth remembering these days.
Thank you @alinabaraz for this one!
And thanks for listening 💙
